Candied apples

Candied apples are made from nice, fresh apples that are coated using sugar mixture and colors. In different parts of the world candied apples have different meanings: for example in Canada are a very popular treat for kids and served in carnivals, the French call them "Fruits of love", in Germany are associated with Christmas, in U.K. are associated with Haloween.

Let's see how to make Candied apples:

Ingredients:

Instructions:

  • Use any kind of apples you like. I chose to use Granny Smith apples because they have an intense green color and are a little bit sour than other apples.

  • Wash very well each apple and degrease then so the coating sticks to it. Then insert in each apple a wooden stick. I had some chinese sticks which i've sharpened a little bit.

  • To make the coating put in a small sauce pan sugar, water, honey and vanilla esence. Keep this mixture on low heat until the sugar starts caramelizing, for about 20 minutes or so. Then add red food coloring and let it for another 5 minutes, then turn the heat off. You can use any kind of colors you want.

  • To make sure the sugar coating is done, put a few drops on a clean plate, if the drops coagulate quickly it means that the coating is done. If the seem to watery just boil it some more. This is the same test as the one used when making preserves or jams.
  • Take each apple and coat it with the red icing. Put them on a plate covered with baking paper so they loosen easily.
